Polishing your nails is a wonderful way to express yourself. Most of those cute little bottles lined up in your wardrobe are filled with toxic chemicals. Some nail polish brands have nearly 30 chemicals all combined. These harsh chemicals can not only be bad for the environment, but also bad for your health and especially for children and pregnant women. The chemicals in lacquers can absorb through nails and into bodies. There have been some scary insights about the effects of being around nail polish fumes for long periods of time. We’re talking issues such as interference with reproductive hormones, dizziness, headaches, and dry skin, just to name a few.
You’ve likely seen the terms ‘3-free’ or ‘5-free’ on polish labels, which refers to the lack of some of the most commonly used chemicals. Today, most polish formulations are at least 3-Free, meaning they don’t contain
- Toulene– A chemical known to cause reproductive harm and dizziness. CDC warns that it can cause central nervous system problems.
- Formaldehyde– This known carcinogen is found in many nail polishes. It is also used to preserve dead things and when used in lab preparations, there are strict warnings to avoid inhalation or skin contact.
- Dibutyl phthalate (DBP) -This chemical is banned in Europe and is known to cause reproductive problems, especially in boys. The Environmental Working Group (EWG) classifies this chemical as the highest danger level and warns that it can cause organ problems and endocrine disruption.
Some nail polish brands take safety a step further by omitting additional chemicals. For example, “five free” polishes do not contain any of the ingredients listed above or either of the following:
- Formaldehyde resin – Helps smooth and harden nail polish.
- Camphor – Promotes nail polish flexibility.
But moving even beyond that, there are now 7-free, 9-free, 10-free
- 7-free contains No formaldehyde, toluene, DBP, formaldehyde resin, camphor, ethyl tosylamide, xylene
- 9-free contains No formaldehyde, toluene, DBP, formaldehyde resin, camphor, ethyl tosylamide, xylene, parabens, acetone
- 10-free contains No formaldehyde, toluene, DBP, formaldehyde resin, camphor, ethyl tosylamide, xylene, parabens, acetone, TPHP, TBHP, gluten and even 13-free formulas out there.
The great news? Not only are these alternative cleaner and safer, but you also don’t have to sacrifice any of the great qualities you want in a polish, like color, wear time, and shine.
Nail polish removers are equally problematic, and the fumes are especially harmful.
The EPA classifies nail polish as household hazardous waste and requests that it is disposed of in a proper hazardous waste disposal site. It is also important to note that nail salons typically use toxic nail polish options. This means the air in nail salons is usually highly contaminated with chemicals.
For those who are looking to or are in the process of making the switch to cleaner beauty products, Nail polish may not be high on the list of priorities but perhaps it should be and the ultimate choice would be to opt for Non-Toxic Nail polish options available in the market to protect yourself and also environment.
