Caring for your baby is one of the most joyful and fulfilling experiences any parent can have, and we know you want to look after your little one in the best way possible. However, with abundant amount of chemicals, toxins and synthetic ingredients and fragrances in many skin and hair care products, babies can have adverse reactions to them, including skin irritation, rashes, and even respiratory issues.
If you look at most of these products made for babies (and adults), you’ll find that they very likely contain ingredients that are linked to hormone disruptions, allergies, inflammation or are carcinogenic in nature. This is because FDA regulations are pretty relaxed when it comes to skincare and other products, so these ingredients tend to be pretty prevalent. Babies are most susceptible to the effects of these chemicals, because their bodies are still growing and developing, and they don’t have the same ability to detox from harmful substances as adults do.
Do you find yourself looking at ingredient lists more and more since starting a family? There are so many things to learn when you’re a new parent. Beyond all of the baby-care basics, there’s the whole world of figuring out what products you need, what items you want in your nursery, and how to ensure that everything you buy is safe and non-toxic for your baby!
Luckily, Natural, Eco-friendly and nontoxic baby care products are an easy way to protect your child, and we’ve found various brands that are all about keeping your baby’s skin hydrated, moisturized, and irritation-free through their early months of life and most importantly they are all top rated as per EWG (Environmental Working Group researchers rigorously assess and rate product ingredients based on potential hazards and health concerns. The rating system works on a scale of 1-10 from low to high hazard)
How to Choose a Non-Toxic and Natural Baby care product
- Harsh/Harmful chemicals: Sulphates (for foam and frothy lather), Parabens (preservatives for shelf life), and Phthalates (dissolving agents) can irritate or even harm your baby’s skin, and they’re often found in skin care products and body washes. So, it’s best to stick to baby-specific or sensitive skin products and avoid these top-rated harsh chemicals.
- Fragrances. While added fragrances may smell nice, some might cause sensitive skin to get overly dry and irritated. Many brands use essential oils or botanical extracts to create natural fragrances, but they may still aggravate sensitive skin, so it’s best to test a very small amount of any product with added fragrance before applying it all over your baby’s skin.
- No-tear formulas. “Tear-free” is a real thing that refers to the absence of eye-irritating substances. So, if the shampoo/body wash you choose doesn’t claim to have a no-tear formula, be careful with it around baby’s eyes.
